Baskets · bowls · centerpieces · designs in floral foam
Some of our baskets, bowls, cubes and centerpieces are designed in floral foam, the green block that holds each stem in place. That foam is also the flowers’ only source of water. Keep it soaked and the design lasts; let it dry once and the flowers fade fast.
You usually can’t see the foam: it sits in a liner under the flowers and greenery. Push a finger gently down between the stems and you will feel it. That is where the water goes.
Add water every day, even if it looks fine
Once a day, slowly pour cool water into the container until it pools at the top of the foam. Use a measuring cup or a small pitcher and aim between the flowers. A small design takes about a cup; a large basket or centerpiece can take two or three.
Dry foam doesn’t soak back up well, which is why it’s easier to keep it wet than to rescue it. In a warm house or in summer, check it morning and evening.
When your flowers arrive
- Feel the foam as soon as it arrives and add water right away. It has been out of our cooler on the drive over.
- Set it on a plate or a tray if it is a basket or a container you’re unsure of. Most have a liner, but a tray protects your furniture.
- Pick a cool spot out of direct sun.
- Leave the stems where they are. Pulling a stem out of foam and pushing it back in leaves it with nothing to drink from.
Where to put them
Foam dries out much faster in heat and sun, so a cool spot matters even more than with a vase.
- A table away from sunny windows, heat vents, lamps and the stove.
- Not on the porch in summer. Our afternoon heat can dry a foam design out in a few hours.
- Away from ripening fruit, which ages flowers faster.
- A dining table centerpiece will last longer if you move it to a cooler room overnight.
Everyday care
Foam Arrangements & Flower Baskets
Fresh flowers in floral foam
- Vase life
- Usually five to seven days, sometimes longer with mums, carnations and greenery.
- Water
- Every day, until water pools on top of the foam. Never let the foam dry out.
- Stems
- Don’t re-cut or move them. Each stem is seated in the foam where it can drink.
- Flower food
- Mix the packet into your watering water if one came with it.
- Temperature
- Cool rooms, ideally 65–72°F. Heat dries the foam and opens the flowers fast.
- Watch for
- A light, dry-feeling container, or foam that has pulled away from the sides. Both mean it needs water now.
Some flowers in a mixed design can upset a pet’s stomach, and floral foam should never be chewed or swallowed. If there are lilies in the design and you have a cat, keep it in a room the cat can’t reach: lilies can cause kidney failure in cats. If any part is eaten, call your veterinarian.
When it starts to fade
The flowers in a foam design won’t all finish at once.
- Gently pull out the faded flowers so the rest look fresh.
- When most of it is done, you can pull the best few stems, re-cut them and put them in a small vase of water for a few more days.
- Floral foam is single-use. When you’re finished, let it dry and put it in the trash, not down the sink or in the yard.
- The basket, bowl or cube is yours to keep and reuse.
Quick fixes
Whole design drooping
The foam has dried out. Water slowly until it pools on top, and check it twice a day from now on.
Water running out the bottom
The liner may have shifted. Set it on a tray and add water a little at a time.
One flower wilting
Its stem may have been bumped loose from the foam. Gently press it back down where it was.
Petals browning at the edges
Heat or sun. Move it to a cooler spot.
Greenery crispy
Dry air or dry foam. Water daily and keep it off heat vents.
Soggy table or stain
Always set baskets on a plate or tray. Wipe it dry and check the liner.
Common questions
How do you water a flower arrangement in foam?
Pour cool water slowly between the stems every day until it pools at the top of the foam.
How long does a flower basket last?
Usually five to seven days if the foam is kept wet.
Can I take the flowers out of the foam and put them in a vase?
Yes. Pull the stems, cut half an inch to an inch off the bottom and put them right into fresh water.
What is the green foam in flower arrangements?
Floral foam: it holds the stems in place and soaks up water for them to drink. Keep it wet and throw it away when you’re done.
